City of Fountain Fire Department
Volunteer Firefighter

The City of Fountain Fire Department has an integrated staff of career and volunteer firefighters. The volunteer firefighters have the same responsibilities and training requirements as the career firefighters, and are eligible to join special response teams within the department such as HAZMAT, Animal Rescue, Technical Rescue, Wildland Fire, and Fire Investigation. Volunteer firefighters are required to pull four 12 hour shifts a month. The shifts are from 0800-2000 hours, and 2000-0800 hours. Volunteer firefighters carry pagers and are alerted to respond for large incidents such as large wildland fires and structure fires when they are off duty.

Applicants accepted into the fire department become recruit candidates and attend a six month fire academy where they receive National Firefighter 1 Certification, Wildland Firefighter Certification, and National HAZMAT Operations Certification. In the academy, volunteers are issued all required safety equipment and personal protection clothing for their use while on duty. Upon graduating from the academy, candidate firefighters become full-members of the Fountain Fire Department by being sworn in by the City Clerk and issued a badge from the Fire Chief. Volunteer firefighters are also eligible to join special response teams within the department.

The Fountain Fire Department selects new candidates once a year on December 1 to attend the fire academy beginning February of the following year. Applications to become a volunteer are accepted year round. Anyone who is interested in serving as a volunteer with the City of Fountain Fire Department is encouraged to submit an application anytime.
